Experiment 2 -- Bridge

Theory

Exposed Structure breaks up the linearity of the volume, creates a sense of movement, and also defines space.

In my Bridge design, these exposed structures mainly exist in two places: skin and tubes.

The facade is made up of glass and metal pipes. These quadrilateral pipes support the large piece of glass and make the structure have an illusion of moving apart. At the east side of the building, the overhanging element breaks the flat east wing platform and therefore creates and defines the space either for learning or entertainment.

To stress the function of building as architecture faculty and embody the architecture movement, trabeated structure system is applied at the square house side, and framing system is applied in other parts of the building.

Lecture Theatre
When there is no lecture being held in the theatre, it can move downwards to create enough extra open space for gallery.

Plan

At first, I tried to use Zaha's Plan as her plan seemed to be easy to transform into my own plan design, and also her architecture ideas symbolised the future. The reason that I gave up my original choice was that the plan I designed for my bridge completely covered the space between roundhouse and international house, dominated the site and restricted the movement of my building. Then I put several tubes, composed of thick walled metal pipes in different area of my building in order to lift and support the building.

Hero shots

My favourite hero shots among these four hero shots. By visual illusion, it shows how a building communicates with nature: extending edges to connect with sky and elongating the base to distribute all of the weight to the earth. At this moment, building contains humans' mental strength, working as a media to achieve the height of the vast cosmos.

By using light sensitive material, this huge curving cover can be used as projection screen at night.

The aim of my design is to build an environmental-friendly building which can greatly reduce the contradiction between nature and auto production. This sunset render reflect the relationship between surrounding environment and building itself. Also, light and shadow in this shot perfectly depicts the layers of the building.

Detail Shots

This detail shot clearly shows the different materials used in this stair: Metal, concrete and glass.

Unfortunately, the trial version of lumion has limited material access, making me fail to adjust the setting of my custom textures. Therefore I made these two screenshots which could have been turned into detail shots. People can watch how designer work for fashion in workshop through these windows. Different shape and colour glass pieces embody the adjective I chose--vivid as well.
